World Wetlands Run

2 - 5 February 2022

Organised to mark World Wetlands Day on February 2nd, the activation in 2022 was the largest public event for wetlands EVER!

In our first event of the year, we honoured the wetlands in a four-day run/walk from 2 - 5 February 2022.

WORLD WETLANDS RUN IS NOW OVER.

WHY FOCUS ON WETLANDS?

For years we have been aware that our forests are dying off through human intervention, but wetlands are actually disappearing three times as fast as forests. We urgently need to address behaviours that are contributing to their decline, especially because currently wetlands are a massive aid against the carbon causing climate change.

USE OUR SHAREPACK TO SPREAD AWARENESS ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

There you will find ready-to-use images and text posts to share to your own social media accounts. Spreading the word is crucial for this campaign. The more people who know about it, the more people will know about the urgent issues facing the wetlands.

READY TO POST ABOUT #WORLDWETLANDSRUN?

Here are some quick copy-and-paste posts you can share to social media. Remember we also have a full sharepack with images that are ready to post whenever you are!

  • Coastal wetlands such as mangroves absorb carbon from the atmosphere up to 55 times faster than tropical rainforests. I’m taking part in #WorldWetlandsRun to ensure these areas can be protected and thrive.

  • Did you know that wetlands provide habitat for thousands of species of aquatic and terrestrial plants and animals? Join me for #WorldWetlandsRun to raise awareness of the preservation of these critical habitats.

  • Did you know that a staggering 40% of the world’s species are reliant in some way on wetlands? These marshes, ponds and river deltas need to be saved! Join me on the #WorldWetlandsRun

  • Without wetlands, cities have to spend more money to treat water, floods are more devastating to communities, animals are displaced or die out, and food supplies are disrupted. Join #WorldWetlandsRun to raise awareness that these areas need to be protected.

Frequently asked questions

  • When we talk about a ‘climate crisis’, what we’re really talking about is a water crisis. This is because climate change affects water first. It affects its availability to us and the environment, it affects how water behaves in severe weather conditions, and it affects our food production. The future of the climate is the future of our water, and vice versa. We need to empower individuals to know more about these harsh realities, so that we can influence leaders like those at this year’s COP26 to urgently get behind policies that protect our climate.

  • We’re glad to have you on board! Please register through this link: https://www.minaguli.com/

  • The event starts on Wednesday, 2nd February (World Wetlands Day), and ends Saturday, 5th February.

  • There is absolutely no cost involved for participation. Registration is free and open to all.

  • You are more than welcome to either walk or run your pledged distances. However, we unfortunately can’t accept distances that are cycled. We do this as a gesture of fairness, and apologise for any inconvenience. We are looking into future developments that include the awesome cyclists in our community.

  • You can choose either kilometers or miles. Whichever is more comfortable for you to use.

  • You certainly can. The more, the merrier! If you would like to register groups you can do so through the regular sign up form and choose the options to sign up as a group.

  • We largely work on an honour system. You don’t need to submit evidence for every kilometer or mile of your walk or run, but we do strongly encourage you to post photos of your effort to social media with the hashtag #WorldWetlandsRun. You can also join our Strava club if that’s more suitable to you. If you don’t have Strava, and don’t use social media, please send your photo(s) to hello@thirstfoundation.org.

  • No. The event runs over three days from 2-5th February. You can do your distance over those three days, on two days, or all on one. It's up to you.

  • Your race bib will emailed to you soon after registration. On completion of the event on 5th February 2022, we will begin to send out the participation certificates.

  • If you are active on social media, we also really encourage you to make use of our social sharing pack, filled with ready-made images and copy for posts across Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You do not need to have a big following to make a difference. Even if you only have one person following you on Instagram, that’s one more person who joins us in our fight for our wetlands.
